MYTH #8: I should always act positively towards my team

TRUTH: You need to be a tough cookie once in a while

You should always try to be as positive as possible, but it’s important to be realistic.

What are the dangers of being too positive?

No one will believe you

Being relentlessly “OTT” positive can lead to a lack of respect from your team. Come on, even the most positive of us (I’m one of them) get pissed off or frustrated once in a while!

No one will have any boundaries

Your team will always need a TINY BIT of fear to perform, and there are times when that needs to come from you.

You need to inject healthy stress; the urgency that things are not moving as quickly as you want. And that will probably need a bit of a push from you now and again!

“Restlessness is discontent, and discontent is the first necessity of progress” Thomas A Edison

Use negative emotion in the right way

You have to use negative emotions… the key is how you use those emotions and finding the balance.  Don’t spend TOO long in a negative place; bitching for bitching’s sake.
