MYTH #5: I must be able to do every job better than my team

TRUTH: You must help people to become better than you

It’s tempting to think that you need to be amazing at everything.


Will proving how good you are really help anyone else grow?

Your job is to develop people, not show off

You must encourage and support your team to become better than you.

The faster YOU develop people to become better than you, the faster you can develop your OWN career.

Is someone already better than you?

If someone is better than you, they’ll probably do a better job AND get it done in the half the time that you would.

So look over the jobs you need doing and see what you can ask them to do.

  1. Let someone more creative prepare the monthly presentation
  2. Invite a better listener to get everyone’s opinions in a meeting
  3. Ask someone more organised to plan the week for your team
  4. Allow someone better at presenting to take the team meeting

It will make them feel awesome and it allows you to focus on being a better manager for them. Everyone wins 🙂

No one likes the guy that thinks he knows everything. The one who thinks he’s the smartest person in the room. Just don’t be that person, ok?

TOP TIP: Going on a longer holiday? Instead of storing up loads of work for when you get back, handover some of the bigger jobs in your role to members of your team who have shown signs of being better than you at them. If they do them successfully while you’re gone, why not let them carry on with them when you’re back?!


“Do I need to do the jobs of those I manage?”

Nope! Does the leader of your business know how to do everyone’s jobs? It can help to be aware, but you need to know how to manage people well… not how to do the specifics of their jobs.

Can I manage someone smarter than me?

You need to be smart to be a great manager, but that doesn’t mean you have to be the smartest.

It’s the same with the smarter people in your team. Don’t try and beat them. Allow them to USE their talents to help you build a better team.
